In Soviet Russia, moped kicks you over...

Postby aph1979 on Thu Jun 25, 2009 6:40 pm

So I picked up my new project tonight - a 1980 Jawa X25.

The Jerkoff carb is a piece of garbage. And fuck thyristors. I have fuel, spark (at the very least, intermittently) and compression and it refuses to fire. I can't even get a cough out of her with starting fluid. The centerstand is so mangled that it's basically a dual sidestand. There's a felt covering surrounding the gas cap that I suppose was meant to keep gas from dripping when filling up, but instead looks like a dog covered in bacon grease and smells far worse. The seat feels like I'm getting buttraped whenever I try to kick her over, which involves propping the back of the bike up on a curb due to the aforementioned centerstand issue.

I think I'm in love.

You see? They suck ass so bad... that you want to make them run as proof to yourself and the other guys who know how shitty they are. Your problem is the thyristor. If it sparks, it still won't fire. Mine had spark, but didn't fire at all. No, it fired once for a second and then lost all spark over time.
Make a new thyristor. It's what I did. You heard mine run. It's jsut that gay leaky carb of mine. I'll put a del on there and it'll go. Also, it needs the wheel bearings or something worked with. Mine are ffffffucked.
Jawa race? Jawa race... bring your pedals.

I'll bring you one pedal - the other one is just the metal shaft and no rubber. This thing is ratty as hell.

There are great plans in the works. I have enough components to wire 10 custom thyristors (at about a buck a piece I could afford spares) so hopefully spark will return. Once I get strong spark I'm going to tear it apart, rewire everything and probably paint it something ugly. I was toying with the notion of doing a top tank conversion but I don't want to copy the work I've done on the Magnum. We'll see.

I have a 15mm Amal carburetor and a matching Puch intake that I'll grind down to fit the 207 cylinder. The only problem with the Amal is that there's only one jet available so hopefully it works on the first try. Rumor has it that they're like the Hobbit carbs - bombproof. If it doesn't work I have a 14mm Bing and intake that I can use. I just really want to find a use for that fucking Amal...

Throw on some apehangers and a ratty old Puch seat and you'll have yourself a race.

I'm thinking I'll paint mine like a million different colors and put stickers all over it and maybe toss some mags on it. Port and polish it to a mirror finish and toss a del on it. maybe 15 or larger. Cram a tecno bullet or a bi turbo on it and we'll ahve a race to the death!

I am proud to report that I once again have a running moped!

After driving across the damn county to pick up my components at UPS I sat down to a relaxing Spaghetti O's dinner with a hearty helping of solder. Fifteen minutes and one Rockstar powershot later and I had a new thyristor!

And then nothing happened.

And then I realized the decomp valve had gotten stuck open.

And then I got spark.

And then I went drifting around my parking lot on a flat rear tire for a half hour.

I love mopeds.

It good pedal motor bike. Leaky like Uncle Tevya's wallet but solid as mule.

I have the final pieces so it will be complete as soon as I get home from work. I have the parts and cables to mount the Amal but lack the motivation to break out the Dremel and do it. The leaky Jerkoff carb will do for now.

Brett and I concur - a night ride is in order sometime soon.

I warn you, it has seen a lot of abuse. Both at my hands and those of the previous owner...

HAHAAA! Yes!
Just you wait til I make mine go. This week, I'll get it out and make it run. I really need a new carb though. :/
Maybe I'll borrow one from another bike... or something...

I feel as if I've won the moped Special Olympics. Just be sure to give credit where it's due.

And my 207 is AT LEAST -3 better than your 210. Do you have the Great Protector? No. Do you get tetanus from your seat? No. Do you smell like root beer after you're done riding? No. Savings are insufficient.
